In a heartening development, residents of the Ramaphosa informal settlement have joined the ranks of beneficiaries in the City of Ekurhuleni’s ambitious electrification program, which seeks to bring light and progress to communities in need.

According to the City of Ekurhuleni, their concerted efforts have led to the electrification of 502 stands in Tokyo Sexwale and an additional 240 in the Ramaphosa settlements, located in Boksburg, east of Johannesburg. This significant milestone reflects the city’s commitment to improving the quality of life for its residents, particularly those residing in informal settlements.

During a brief visit on Tuesday, September 12, Cllr Leshaka Manamela, the Member of the Mayoral Committee for Water, Sanitation, and Energy, expressed his satisfaction with the remarkable progress achieved in the electrification project. He noted, “It is good to see that the community members are already benefiting from this project. Some are now enjoying clean water and electricity, while others got employment opportunities. This project is one of the major milestones of the Government of the People which is running the City of Ekurhuleni.”

Meanwhile, the City of Ekurhuleni has garnered recognition on a broader scale. China Dodovu, the chairperson of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Human Settlements, Water, and Sanitation, recently lauded the municipality as ‘the best-run municipality in the country.’

During the committee’s oversight visit to Ekurhuleni, Dodovu commended the city for consistently receiving clean audits and achieving remarkable successes. He stated, “Ekurhuleni is doing so well that we as this committee are considering inviting you to parliament so that we can learn a few things from you. Whatever you are getting right here must be shared with the other municipalities in this country because they can surely learn a lot from you.”

The City of Ekurhuleni’s commitment to progress, exemplified by its electrification program and recognized through clean audits, is making a significant impact on the lives of its residents and serving as an example for municipalities across the nation.
