In a tragic incident, an officer from the SA Police Service (SAPS) and four suspects lost their lives in a multi-vehicle collision on Corlett Drive in Waverley, Johannesburg, this past Monday.
According to Xolani Fihla, spokesperson for the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD), the officer was transporting the suspects in an official vehicle from court when the accident occurred.
Nana Radebe-Kgiba, a spokesperson for Emergency Management Services, confirmed the unfortunate demise of the four suspects.
Public Safety MMC Mgcini Tshwaku, reporting from the scene to News24, mentioned that the driver of a 4×4 vehicle lost control after colliding with a Mini Cooper and subsequently crashing into multiple cars, including the SAPS vehicle.
JMPD officers took action by closing the M1 South and redirecting traffic flow. The accident’s cause remains under investigation.
Fihla stated, “What we know at the moment is that the accident involved five vehicles. The number of fatalities is also under investigation. The M1 South is completely closed near Corlett Drive.”
