Police in Limpopo are advising parents and guardians to remain cautious and vigilant following a distressing incident where a four-year-old girl, Phologo Machaba, lost her life after choking on a marula fruit in Kauletsi Village. The incident occurred on Thursday around 7:15 pm, as the young child was playing with a group of children. Despite being rushed to Witpoort Hospital for medical attention, the marula fruit lodged in her throat proved fatal.

Colonel Malesela Ledwaba, the provincial police spokesperson, stated that an investigation into the tragic incident has been initiated as an inquest case. Major General Jan Scheepers, Acting Police Commissioner in Limpopo, emphasized the crucial role of parents and guardians in maintaining awareness of their children’s activities and highlighted the potential choking hazard associated with consuming certain fruits.

In an unrelated incident in the Western Cape, swift police action led to the arrest of a suspect involved in the robbery of a security guard in Harare. Police responded to the alert, pursued the suspects, and successfully apprehended one individual who brandished a firearm. The arrested suspect was found in possession of a 9mm pistol, ammunition, and a knife. He is scheduled to appear in the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
