In a recent podcast interview on Within with Hazel, Tony Forbes, the father of the late Kiernan Forbes, popularly known as AKA, shared his belief that his son’s murder nearly a year ago was a meticulously planned and well-funded assassination.
The tragic incident occurred when AKA was shot at close range as he left the Wish restaurant on Florida Road in Durban, marking a devastating loss for the South African music industry. AKA’s friend, Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane, was also fatally shot during the encounter.
Speaking on the podcast, Tony Forbes revealed that, based on the information they have been briefed on, AKA’s murder was not a random act of violence but a calculated and premeditated crime. He emphasized that the assailants displayed a level of planning and utilized significant resources, ruling out any possibility of a random incident.
Describing the incident, Tony recounted how the gunman specifically targeted AKA, shooting him in the head, while a second shooter ensured the completion of the “job” by fatally wounding Motsoane. Tony expressed his conviction that the act was anything but random, pointing to the orchestrated nature of the attack.
While acknowledging the progress made in the investigation, Tony refrained from divulging specific details, emphasizing the need for the investigation to run its course. He expressed confidence in the work of the South African Police Service investigators, noting that two individuals are already in custody, as previously disclosed by Police Minister Bheki Cele.
Tony shared insights into AKA’s connection to Durban and his deep appreciation for Zulu culture from a young age. Despite the progress in the investigation, the motive behind the murder remains unknown. Tony expressed his desire to understand the motive and pledged to be present in the courtroom when it is revealed.
