A Cape Flats family is grappling with shock and grief as their beloved son, Nadeem Mclean, 30, was shot and killed by gangsters just days before celebrating his 31st birthday. The devoted husband and father of two was gunned down while buying cigarettes at a local tuck shop in Pendoring Street, Bonteheuwel, on Tuesday evening, February 20.

Nadeem had just finished preparing supper for his family when he headed to the nearby shop. His sister, Nazli Mclean, expressed the family’s devastation at the senseless murder, recounting how he was cooking for his family moments before his fatal visit to the shop.

The shooting occurred shortly before 9 pm, witnessed by another patron at the shop who described the harrowing incident. The eyewitness, fearing reprisals, reported hearing a single shot, witnessing the shooter, and seeking refuge in a nearby yard until the gunfire ceased.

Nadeem, the youngest and only son among three siblings, was known as a hardworking father who deeply loved his family. His two sons, aged eight and 13, now face the tragic loss of their father.

The family, still in shock, was looking forward to celebrating Nadeem’s 31st birthday on Saturday, making his untimely death even more heartbreaking. His sister recounted the devastating moment she discovered her brother’s lifeless body at home, lying in a pool of blood.

The funeral, according to Muslim rites, is scheduled for Thursday. The Western Cape police spokesperson, Sergeant Wesley Twigg, confirmed the fatal shooting, indicating that a 20-year-old man and a 12-year-old girl were also injured in the incident. Twigg stated that the attack was gang-related, and investigations are ongoing, urging anyone with information to contact Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
