The Water and Sanitation Directorate of the City of Cape Town has revealed plans for maintenance work on the water supply infrastructure, set to take place from February 27 to February 29. While the City acknowledges that the maintenance will lead to temporary disruptions in various areas, it emphasizes the necessity of the work to enhance the efficiency and longevity of the water supply system. Residents are urged to make necessary preparations in advance.
The maintenance schedule includes zero-pressure tests (ZPT) and conditional assessments in specific neighborhoods on designated dates:
- Tuesday, February 27: Maintenance in Bellville South, Beroma, Glenhaven, Labiance, and Kasselsvlei from 10 am to 4 pm. Additional work in the Polkadraai – Blackheath area from 9 am to 4 pm, and a section of Strand bounded by Algoa Street, De Ruyter Street, Beach Road, and Main Road from 9 am to 4 pm.
- Wednesday, February 28: Maintenance in Somerset Ridge, Westridge, and Audas Estate – Somerset West area from 9 am to 4 pm.
- Thursday, February 29: Maintenance in Cherrywood Gardens, Roundhay, Lionviham, Kalamunda, and Audas Estate – (Bizweni) Somerset West area from 9 am to 4 pm.
During the maintenance tests, residents may experience low water pressure or no water supply. The City will conduct pressure management installations and operations to ensure effective pressure-reducing valve (PRV) operations and minimize water wastage.
It is emphasized that the maintenance work is scheduled to minimize disruption, and work sites are designated construction zones, off-limits to the public. Unforeseen complexities may extend the duration of maintenance.
Following restoration, water may temporarily appear discolored due to trapped air in the pipes. The City assures residents that this is harmless.
To prepare for the disruptions, residents are advised to store an adequate supply of water in clean, sealed containers and keep taps closed to prevent water loss and damage upon restoration.
