In a disturbing incident, a 48-year-old woman has been apprehended in Limpopo on suspicion of murdering her 18-year-old son, who was wheelchair-bound.
According to Limpopo provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, the mother purportedly decapitated her son in what has been described as a “shocking” event by local law enforcement. The tragic incident unfolded at Leshikishiki village within the Lebowakgomo policing area.
Upon receiving a report of the murder around 1 pm on Friday, May 3, 2024, police arrived at the scene near a local tavern to find the decapitated body of the young man on his wheelchair, with his head lying nearby. Remarkably, no witnesses were present at the scene.
Brigadier Mashaba stated that subsequent investigations led to the arrest of the teenager’s mother, who was positively linked to the crime. A knife, believed to have been used in the gruesome act, was seized by authorities.
Expressing deep shock over the incident, Limpopo’s provincial commissioner of police, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, condemned the mother’s actions, emphasizing the importance of parental responsibility in nurturing and safeguarding children.
Authorities have opened a murder case, although the motive behind the heinous attack remains unclear.
The accused mother is scheduled to appear before the Thabamoopo Magistrate’s Court in Limpopo.
This tragic event echoes a similar incident reported by IOL last month, where a 42-year-old man in Sekgosese, Limpopo, was arrested for allegedly murdering his mother and then parading her body in a wheelbarrow for community members to witness.
