The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng has taken a firm stance as the official opposition in the Gauteng Provincial Legislature. Following robust negotiations and weeks of engagement, the DA declined to accept seats on the African National Congress’ (ANC) terms. Consequently, the DA will not be part of the Executive of the Gauteng Government of Provincial Unity (GPU).
In the spirit of unity and trust-building, the DA entered critical negotiations. However, co-opting the DA into government was impossible, as the party aims to be a power-sharing partner rather than a mere rubber stamp for executive decisions. The ANC’s refusal to recognize the significance of their vote share loss in Gauteng and their unwillingness to truly partner dominated discussions.
The DA’s history as a strong and thorough opposition remains intact. The party is proud to return to the opposition benches, where it will diligently serve the people of Gauteng. The DA’s principles, aligned with the Statement of Intent signed by both parties nationally, are non-negotiable. Fairness, proportionality, and adherence to principles matter, and the DA will hold the newly formed executive and all departments accountable.
Stay tuned for the announcement of the new Shadow Cabinet, which will relentlessly ensure transparency and effective governance.
