Twenty-four learners from Enzani Primary School in Matsulu, Mpumalanga, have been discharged from the hospital following a suspected food poisoning incident. The pupils were admitted after experiencing abdominal pains and other related symptoms.

This incident marks the second case of suspected food poisoning in the province this month, following a similar situation where over 20 students from Marhagi Secondary School were hospitalized in Verena.

Gerald Sambo, spokesperson for the Provincial Education Department, stated that investigations are currently underway. He noted, “The indication from the school is that the learners began complaining of pain and vomiting after purchasing snacks called Chippa from a local spaza shop. We will rely on the hospital’s report to determine the exact cause of the illness. All the learners were released yesterday to the care of their parents.”

In response to the allegations, Truda Foods, the producer of Chippa, has denied any connection to the reported incidents. Anthony Grant, a representative for the company, stated, “There’s absolutely no basis for the allegation. Our maize products undergo a cooking process at 195 degrees Celsius, making it impossible for food poisoning to occur from our snacks. We categorically deny any link between our products and the incidents involving the children.”

The investigation into the source of the suspected food poisoning continues.
