Alexandra, Johannesburg – The Discovery Alex Primary School Soccer League championship is set to reach its thrilling conclusion on Wednesday, November 6th, with semi-finals and finals taking place at Alex Stadium. The event, which has been building excitement over the past eight weeks, will see local schools in Alexandra battle it out for the coveted championship title.

Part of the broader Discovery Johannesburg Primary Schools Soccer Programme, the league, which has been running since 2013, aims to foster community engagement and promote healthier lifestyles among young students. The programme, sponsored by Discovery, encourages youth participation in sports and embodies the company’s core mission of improving people’s health and well-being from an early age.

Deon Curtis, Senior Manager at Discovery Sponsorships, highlighted the program’s significant impact. “With 400 players from 12 schools participating annually, the league has become an important community event. It also serves as a platform for promoting health, teamwork, and a spirit of community,” he said.

The championship final, set to run from 13:00 to 15:30 on November 6th, will feature top teams in both male and female divisions, showcasing the incredible talent of young athletes. The event will culminate in an awards ceremony, and spectators are encouraged to join in the excitement at Alex Stadium.

Notably, the league has become a springboard for future stars. Some players have gone on to join teams such as the Blue Birds Ladies Academy and other senior football leagues, demonstrating the programme’s ability to nurture talent and provide opportunities for growth in the sport.

The league is a collaborative effort, with around 40 educators involved in coaching and managing the programme. It is endorsed by the district and national departments of basic education and sports, along with support from local football associations and the City of Joburg.

In addition to tournament play, Discovery provides participating schools with two sets of soccer kits for both girls’ and boys’ teams. Discovery’s community commitment also extends beyond the pitch, with Discovery Vitality partner Nando’s providing healthy meals for players during the league’s events.

The culmination of this year’s league will also see the selection of 15 of the best players from each division, who will be invited to participate in the Discovery Festival next year.

The championship final promises to be a highlight of the year, drawing over 500 spectators to celebrate the talent and determination of Alexandra’s youth.
