Amanzimtoti, KwaZulu-Natal – Traffic along the N2 southbound in Amanzimtoti is severely disrupted after the partial collapse of the Umbongintwini River Bridge. The incident, which occurred following heavy rains over the weekend, has prompted authorities to close the south-bound carriageway over the bridge.
The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) confirmed that specialists are currently assessing the damage, while traffic is being diverted through alternative routes. Vehicles are being rerouted from Joiner Road to bypass the affected area.
Ward Councillor Andre Beetge confirmed that drivers are being redirected, and local authorities are advising motorists to proceed with caution when approaching the site.
SANRAL’s Vusi Mona stated, “The heavy rains experienced this past weekend contributed to the bridge failure. Our engineers are on-site evaluating the damage and determining necessary remedial actions.”
KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport Sboniso Duma confirmed that he has been in constant communication with Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy, who assured him that SANRAL is managing the situation. The N2 bridge falls under the agency’s jurisdiction.
Authorities are urging commuters to remain vigilant and follow traffic advisories while repairs are being assessed.
