South African singer Tyla made history at the 2024 MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs), walking away with three major awards and securing her place among the world’s biggest music stars. Her victories included Best Afrobeats Artist, Best African Act, and Best R&B Artist, marking a career-defining moment for the rising star.

Tyla’s win in the Best Afrobeats Artist category was particularly remarkable, as she triumphed over a host of prominent Nigerian Afrobeats icons, including Asake, Tems, Rema, Burna Boy, and Ayra Starr. Her achievement signifies a rising influence in the global Afrobeats scene and highlights her crossover appeal beyond Africa.

In the Best African Act category, Tyla edged out tough competition from fellow African superstars like Nigerian artist Asake, South Africa’s DBN Gogo, and Tanzanian musician Diamond Platnumz. Her win solidified her status as one of Africa’s leading talents, garnering recognition not only in South Africa but across the continent.

Tyla’s third victory of the night came in the Best R&B Artist category, where she surpassed American icons such as Kehlani, SZA, Tinashe, Usher, and Victoria Monét. This win further establishes her as a global force in R&B music, showcasing her versatility and wide-ranging talent.

Despite receiving four nominations, Nigerian singer Ayra Starr left the ceremony empty-handed. Ayra was nominated for Best African Act, Best New Artist, Best Afrobeats Artist, and Best Push, but faced stiff competition in all categories.

Tyla’s success at the 2024 MTV EMAs highlights the growing global recognition of African artists and the increasing influence of African music across various genres.
