The Freedom in the World 2024 report has highlighted the dire situation in Malawi, describing the country as experiencing “extreme economic distress” while being categorized as “partly free.” This assessment has led to increasing concerns over the nation’s escalating political and economic crises.
Politician Dalitso Kabambe, in an open letter following week-long demonstrations, has called for intervention from the African Union (AU) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) to help address the nation’s mounting challenges. Kabambe’s letter, which underscores the urgency of the situation, suggests a six-point agenda aimed at stabilizing the country and preventing further unrest.
Kabambe, the president of the United Transformation Movement (UTM), has urged the Malawian government to take swift action to address the ongoing economic and political turmoil. His proposed agenda includes reforms to tackle corruption, improve governance, and stabilize the economy in the face of mounting public dissatisfaction and widespread protests.
