Busisiwe Memela-Khambula, the CEO of the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa), has been placed on precautionary suspension pending an investigation into her appointment. The suspension, announced by Social Development Minister Nokuzola Tolashe, comes in response to “serious issues” raised by the Public Protector, prompting the need for an impartial probe.

Tolashe emphasized that the suspension would allow for a thorough investigation without interference, ensuring that decisions made would serve the best interests of Sassa’s millions of beneficiaries. She further stressed the need for transparency, efficiency, and accountability within the agency to address the challenges of hunger and poverty in South Africa.

Themba Matlou, Sassa’s regional executive manager for Gauteng, has been appointed as Acting CEO while the investigation into Memela-Khambula’s appointment is ongoing.

The investigation follows allegations of misconduct involving former Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu, particularly regarding the improper appointment of senior managers and failure to act on recommendations from the Special Investigating Unit (SIU). Memela-Khambula was also implicated in the irregular procurement and distribution of food parcels in the Eastern Cape, which led to calls for disciplinary action.
