President Bola Tinubu called for intensified cooperation between Nigeria and South Africa, emphasizing that the success of their partnership lies in the implementation of agreements, not just in signing them. Speaking at the 11th session of the Nigeria-South Africa Bi-National Commission (BNC) in Cape Town, Tinubu highlighted the shared historical responsibility of both nations in advancing Africa’s future.
The meeting, marking the 25th anniversary of the BNC, saw the signing of approximately 36 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) between the two countries. However, Tinubu stressed that these MoUs are only effective if implemented consistently.
He also focused on youth development, urging both countries to leverage their large youthful populations for economic growth, stressing that investing in youth skills and potential is crucial for the continent’s future. Additionally, Tinubu proposed the creation of an anti-illegal mining group to tackle illegal resource exploitation and protect Africa’s natural wealth.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa acknowledged Nigeria’s role as a key partner and reiterated his country’s commitment to enhancing trade and business opportunities, including simplifying visa processes for Nigerian entrepreneurs. He also expressed support for Nigeria’s aspirations to join global organizations such as the G20 and BRICS.
The two leaders agreed to remove barriers to investment and strengthen bilateral ties, underscoring the importance of implementing previous agreements for the growth of both nations and Africa as a whole.
