South African humanitarian Dr. Imtiaz Sooliman, the founder of the Gift of the Givers, Africa’s largest disaster relief organization, is facing allegations of having links to radical Islamist groups, including Iran, Hezbollah, and Hamas. These claims have sparked heated debates and drawn widespread attention, especially following a recent social media post by South African musician David “The Kiffness” Scott.
In early December 2024, Scott accused Sooliman of being a “false prophet” and a “radical Islamist,” further suggesting that Gift of the Givers was a “front for a far more sinister agenda.” The accusations were tied to Sooliman’s past connections with organizations like the Al Aqsa Foundation, which some have alleged was linked to Hamas. However, Sooliman strongly denied these claims, asserting that he had cut ties with the foundation long ago, before founding Gift of the Givers, and had always maintained transparency in his operations.
Sooliman’s detractors, including Israeli-backed journalist Lawrence Nowosenetz and writer Marika Sboros, have also attempted to tie him to financial support for Hamas, citing his work in Gaza. These allegations have been based on the assumption that funds raised for humanitarian purposes may have indirectly benefited the militant group. Despite these claims, Sooliman has repeatedly stated that Gift of the Givers operates under strict financial oversight and international scrutiny, with no evidence linking the organization to terrorist activity.
Sooliman, a prominent advocate for humanitarian work in conflict zones such as Syria and Gaza, has been outspoken about his views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. He has criticized both Israeli military actions and the tactics of groups like Hamas. His stance has led some to question his neutrality and motives, particularly in the wake of the October 2023 Hamas-led attacks on Israel.
The controversy surrounding Sooliman has also impacted his reputation in South Africa. A recent invitation for him to deliver a memorial lecture at the Helen Suzman Foundation was contested by Nowosenetz, who argued that Sooliman’s alleged support for anti-Israel causes made him an inappropriate speaker. However, the Foundation chose to proceed with the event, citing their belief in Sooliman’s humanitarian work.
Meanwhile, Gift of the Givers continues its operations in Gaza, where the organization has been providing essential aid despite the ongoing conflict. Sooliman’s team has faced significant risks, including the loss of staff members and the destruction of their facilities. Despite these challenges, the organization remains steadfast in its mission to deliver medical aid, food, and water to those in need.
While the allegations against Sooliman continue to fuel controversy, the focus remains on the critical humanitarian work being carried out by Gift of the Givers, highlighting the complexities of international aid amidst a highly polarized political climate.
