CAPE TOWN – The GOOD Party has welcomed the completion of the Western Cape provincial government’s investigation into the tragic George building collapse, which claimed 34 lives and left many others seriously injured.
The provincial government appointed an independent structural engineering firm to determine the cause of the five-storey building’s collapse. On Thursday, Western Cape Premier Alan Winde officially handed over the firm’s report to senior police officials.
Winde expressed hope that the findings would assist the South African Police Service (SAPS) in their ongoing criminal investigation into the disaster.
GOOD Party Calls for Accountability
Responding to the development, GOOD Party George councillor Chantelle Kyd emphasized the need for justice and prevention measures.
“It has been almost nine months since the tragedy took 34 lives and seriously injured many others. The painful loss of loved ones in such a horrific accident is something that no person should have to endure. This report is needed to not only hold those responsible accountable but also to prevent further incidents of this nature from occurring.”
The collapse, which took place in May 2023, shocked the nation, raising concerns over building safety regulations and construction oversight.
With the report now in police hands, the next steps will likely include possible criminal charges against those found responsible for any negligence or violations of safety standards.
The GOOD Party and other stakeholders are now urging authorities to ensure swift accountability and stronger enforcement of building regulations to prevent similar disasters in the future.
