South Africa’s Sport, Arts, and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie has drawn sharp criticism following his recent remarks that he would never support the removal of white South Africans, stating unequivocally, “I can never say ‘abahambe’ (they must go) to any South African, whites are South Africans.”

His comments come as tensions between South Africa and the United States escalate, following the White House’s announcement of an executive order cutting financial aid to South Africa. The move, according to US officials, is linked to South Africa’s Expropriation Act and its genocide case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).

US Refugee Offer for White South Africans Rejected

Further fueling the controversy, the US government revealed plans to resettle white South African farmers and their families under its Refugee Admissions Program. However, this proposal has been widely rejected by Afrikaner groups, including AfriForum, which has dismissed the offer.

McKenzie, who has been vocal against illegal immigration, particularly from Zimbabwe, defended white South Africans, insisting that they belong in the country and should not be lumped into broader anti-immigration rhetoric.

“Whenever South Africa is faced with a tragedy or bad news, the people celebrating are always illegal foreigners, particularly Zimbabweans. Your time in South Africa is running out fast. You hate us while staying illegally in our country,” McKenzie posted on social media.

Support for Dricus du Plessis Sparks Further Debate

Adding to the debate, McKenzie also congratulated South African UFC middleweight champion Dricus du Plessis on his recent victory over US-based fighter Sean Strickland, despite Du Plessis’s public support for former US President Donald Trump before the fight.

“A champion representing South Africa on the international stage, entering the ring wearing the South African flag—I must not support him now because he did or said something I or you disagree with? You guys have gone mad. Well done, Du Plessis.”

His remarks sparked mixed reactions, with some praising his patriotism while others accused him of prioritizing white South Africans’ interests for political or financial gain.

Social Media Backlash

McKenzie’s statements have ignited a storm on social media, with critics questioning his position on race, immigration, and national unity.

  • Some accused him of double standards, arguing that his tough stance on illegal foreigners conflicts with his defense of white South Africans, especially amid US-South Africa tensions.
  • Others supported his comments, emphasizing the need for national unity and rejecting divisive politics.

McKenzie has yet to respond to the criticism, but his remarks have further fueled debates about identity, immigration, and racial politics in South Africa.
