A team of bright young minds from Cape Town is en route to Houston, Texas, to represent South Africa at the 2025 FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) World Championship, which kicks off on Tuesday.
The Astrovo Robotics team, made up of seven learners from the Cape Academy of Maths, Science and Technology, will compete against 600 top-performing robotics teams from around the globe in a high-stakes test of innovation, engineering, and teamwork.
Western Cape Education Department (WCED) spokesperson Bronagh Hammond expressed pride and confidence in the team ahead of their international journey.
“The Western Cape Education Department extends our best wishes to the Astrovo Robotics team. As they prepare to represent South Africa at this prestigious event, we have no doubt they will make us proud,” said Hammond.
She added that beyond the competition, the event provides a unique opportunity for the learners to exchange ideas, learn from global peers, and further sharpen their robotics and programming skills.
“The Astrovo team are the 2025 South African Champions, Western Cape champions, and National Inspire Award winners. With this impressive track record, we are confident they will make their mark on the global stage,” Hammond said.
The FTC World Championship is known for fostering STEM education through a dynamic mix of coding, engineering, and real-time problem solving — key skills for the tech leaders of tomorrow.
